A Kenyan marathoner, Bernard Sang, on Saturday won the Access Bank 2024 Lagos City Marathon.
In the 9th running of the event on Saturday morning, Sang defeated over eighty other top marathoners to win the 42-km race.
He took home the $50,000 grand prize, reports Persecondnews.
The Kenyan took home $40,000 and $30,000 in prize money, placing second and third, respectively, behind best fellow countrymen Simon Cheprot and Edwin Kiptoo, who completed in 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 49 seconds.
Sang, who took part in 2023 as well, came in third.
The first female finisher was Ethiopian Kebene Chala, 25, who was running the race.
She’s going to claim $50,000 as well.
The male and female race winners advanced to the marathon competition at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
The first person from Nigeria to cross the finish line was Shehu Muazu, who would get a N1 million cash reward.
Persecondnews reports that the 42-km race had its start and finish points at Victoria Island’s Eko Atlantic City on the island and the National Stadium in Surulere, on the mainland.
Lagos State Government has announced road closures for the competition.
Major routes that were shut between 5.00 am and 2.00 pm are Funsho Williams Avenue from Stadium, Surulere; Ikorodu Road to Anthony, Gbagada to Third Mainland Bridge, Third Mainland Bridge (Inbound and Outbound), Dolphin Road to Alfred Rewane Road, Falomo Roundabout to Bourdillon Road, Lekki Bridge to Freedom Way.
