Former US President Donald Trump surrendered to the State of Georgia’s authorities on Thursday – his fourth arrest this year – over charges that he plotted to overturn the state’s 2020 election results.

Live cable news TV footage monitored by Per Second News showed intensified security outside the Fulton County jail, with barricades blocking off a small crowd of Trump supporters.

“I have to start getting ready to head down to Atlanta, Georgia, to get arrested,” Mr Trump said in a post on Truth Social before his travel by plane.

Trump arrived at the jail shortly after 7:30 p.m in a presidential-style motorcade and was booked, fingerprinted and photographed for a mugshot within minutes, according to jail records. Trump was quickly released, according to the records.

He called Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis a “lowlife” in his post.

Trump’s mugshot was taken like his co-defendants, adding to a growing list of ignominious firsts for the former president, who is now facing four separate criminal cases.

Mr Trump maintains a commanding lead over his Republican rivals in run up to 2024 presidential elections.

“I’ve been indicted four times – all trivial nonsense,” he said in an interview.
