32 years after, Super Falcons remain unbeaten, through to Round of 16, hold Ireland to goalless draw

With the Super Falcons goalless draw against Ireland, Nigeria will now face either England or Denmark in their 2023 Women’s World Cup Round of 16 encounter on August 7.

The Ireish ladies ranked 22 in the world, dominated possession and almost led inside the opening five minutes, but Katie McCabe drove a low shot just wide.

The 11-time Africa champion players will each receive FIFA’s $30 000, an equivalent of ₦23.129 million for reaching the knockout stage of the competition.

Meanwhile, the other group game which took place simultaneously, Olympics Women’s gold medalists, Canada were sent packing after being walloped 4 -0 by host Australia.

The Super Falcons, for the first time since making their debut in China 1991, Randy Waldrum-led ladies played their Group B matches involving Canada, Australia and Republic of Ireland and remained unbeaten.

Waldrum’s side finished second in Group B with five points from three games.

Co-hosts Australia top the standings having amassed six points from same number of chances.

The Matildas defeated Canada 3-0 also on Monday.

Ireland were the better side in the first half but the best chance of the half fell to Nigeria.
