With less than 58 days to the end of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, a minister of cabinet rank has thrown in the towel.

Chief Timipre Sylva, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, assisting Buhari, who doubles as the substantive minister of petroleum, resigned from office on Friday a few hours ago.

It could not be immediately ascertained why the former Bayelsa Governor quit but it was learnt that it might not be unconnected with Bayelsa governorship election coming up later in the year.

Persecondnews recalls that Sylva had declared his interest to participate in the forthcoming All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election in April 2023 preparatory to the governorship poll.

Sylva had served as governor of Bayelsa for one term before he was defeated by  PDP’s Seriake Dickson.

Contacted for confirmation, Mr Horatius Egua, the minister’s Senior Adviser on Media and Communications, could not deny or confirm the resignation.

“I have not seen the resignation letter or have not been officially informed of the resignation by the minister,” he said.
