Eight students of Madonna University in Okija, Anambra State, who were heading home for the February 25 presidential and National Assembly polls, have lost their lives in a lone accident.

The bus in which they were traveling to Taraba State immediately caught fire when it had accident on Trans-Saharan Road, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

Mathew Mbam, who broke the news on Monday on his facebook page said that the students met their tragic death while travelling to Taraba State to participate in the coming elections.

The accident occurred on Saturday, February 18 at TTC/Special Science School junction on the Trans-Saharan Road.

He said: “It is with a heavy heart that we report the tragic news of the death of eight students of Madonna University, Okija in Anambra state, who died in a fatal auto crash while on their way to Taraba State for Saturday’s election.”

He said the bus carrying the students and their parents was coming from Port-Harcourt.

According to him, the bus conveying the students caught fire and burnt all the occupants.

“The tragic news of their death has sent shock waves through their family, friends, and the Madonna University community.

”It is a reminder that we must always be mindful of the dangers of road travel and take steps to ensure our safety.

”It is believed that over-speeding and distractions due to intermittent sleep while driving are some major causes of such auto accidents.

“Road safety must be taken seriously at all times, and drivers should be extra cautious to ensure the safety of all road users.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims and to the Madonna University community.
