Lagos records another container-laden articulated vehicle mishap, the eighth in five days

Lagos metropolis and emerging mega city again on Wednesday recorded another accident involving a containerised truck at the ever busy Oshodi, the state’s commercial and transportation hub.

Persecondnews reports that a 40-feet container had fallen besides a Tata high- capacity bus in the usually heavy vehicular and human traffic.

However, all the passengers on board the bus escaped death as a result of its height and that the container did not fall on it.

Ex-Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode had in 2018 built a world-class gigantic bus terminal at Oshodi, the centre of Lagos, where buses can be connected to all parts of the state.

A spokesman for the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), Mr Adebayo Taofiq, who also confirmed the incident, said no casualty was recorded.

“We are lucky that the container fell beside the bus and not on the bus. The passengers on the bus ran out when this happened,” he said.

The LASTMA official said most of the trucks could not pass the required minimum safety standards.

According to him, there is no reason the truckers load containers without something to hold it permanently.

“From Sunday till now, we have recorded seven to eight fallen tankers,” Persecondnews quotes Taofiq as saying.

Also, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in a statement, said that the truck, with no registration number, lost control due to mechanical fault (brakes failure) and fell just beside the bus with registration number JJJ 550XX.

“No life was lost nor injuries recorded,” the agency said.

First responders including LASEMA, LASTMA and the police have been deployed to the scene of incident to clear the vehicles and restore free flow of traffic.

Truck-related accidents have been recurring in Lagos of late.

Nine passengers lost their lives on Sunday, January 29 when a container-laden truck fell on a commercial bus on Ojuelegba bridge in Lagos.

A day after, a 40-feet container-laden truck fell on the road along the Dopemu area of the state among others.
