DSS arrests Dr Doyin Okupe, ex-DG, Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign Council at airport

Former Director-General of the Labour Party’s Presidential Campaign Council, Dr Doyin Okupe has been reportedly apprehended by the Department of State Service (DSS).

Okupe, who resigned in December 2022 as the DG, was nabbed at the Muritala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, while boarding a flight to London.

An indication to this effect was given by one of his lawyers, Mr Tolu Babaleye in a Facebook post.

His arrest might not be unconnected with a request by the DSS for him to provide court processes where he paid the fine option (N13 million) following his conviction in December 2022 by a Federal High Court in Abuja for money laundering.

Persecondnews had reported on December 20, Okupe, a former Senior Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, was found guilty of receiving over N200 million cash from a former National Security Adviser, retired Col. Sambo Dasuki.

He was sentenced to two years imprisonment by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of a Federal High Court in Abuja with an option of N500, 000 fine on each of the 26-count charge for which he was found guilty.

Delivering her judgment, Ojukwu held that Okupe, who is the first defendant in the suit filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission violated the Money Laundering Act.

She said he had up to 4.30 pm on December 20 to pay the fine option totalling N13m on all the charges he was found guilty of or be sent to the Kuje Correctional Centre (Prison).
