Morocco’s feat of becoming the first African team since the inception of the World Cup in 1930 to get to the semi-final in the ongoing mundial in Qatar has excited Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari, in the spirit of African brotherhood, congratulated the Atlas Lions of Morocco and the country’s ruler, King Mohammed, for making Africa proud and also becoming the first African team in 92 years to book a spot in the semi-final after defeating Portugal with a lone goal.
“Morocco has reignited the believe than African team can win the World cup, and should win the the ongoing football spectacle in Qatar,” the president said in a statement by his spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, on Monday, a copy of which was given to Persecondnews in Abuja.
He said the team telepathic understanding and team work was down to the Moroccan authorities continual display of exemplary qualities.
Meanwhile, the Moroccan victory means Africa will get 11 slots in the 2026 World Cup, nine permanent slots, one via playoffs, and one because they reached the semi-final of the World Cup, persecondnews reports.
The 2026 FIFA World cup would be the first to include 48 teams, expanded from 32 under this format, the number of games played would increase from 64 to 104 games.
