At The UN: Buhari slams leaders who extend term limits, vows to hold free, credible elections in 2023

President Muhammadu Buhari used his speech at the UN on Wednesday morning to slam fellow leaders who extend term limits to cling to power, saying this was having a “corrosive” effect, and promised free and fair elections when the country elects his successor in February.

“We believe in the sanctity of constitutional term limits and we have steadfastly adhered to it in Nigeria. We have seen the corrosive impact on values when leaders elsewhere seek to change the rules to stay on in power,” said Buhari in an address covered by Per Second News.

Speaking at his last UN General Assembly, Mr Buhari said Nigeria had invested heavily to ensure free and fair elections.

“As president, I have set the goal that one of the enduring legacies I would like to leave is to entrench a process of free, fair and transparent and credible elections through which Nigerians elect leaders of their choice.”

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden on Wednesday is announcing $2.9 billion in global food security aid to address shortages caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the effects of climate change.

The White House says Biden will use his speech at the UN General Assembly to announce the funding, which includes $2bn in direct humanitarian assistance through the US Agency for International Development. The balance of the money will go to global development projects meant to boost the efficiency and resilience of the global food supply.
