A former Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, who was shot on Friday while delivering a stump speech at a rally in the western city of Nara, is dead.

He was addressing the political rally two days to the country’s election.

Japan’s longest-serving leader was attacked by a 41-year-old man from behind at 11:30 a.m. while speaking in front of Kintetsu Railway’s Yamato-Saidaiji Station, police said

He collapsed to the ground after two shots were fired at him.

He was, however, rushed to hospital with blood seen on his shirt but did not survive it as he was in a state of cardiac arrest.
