Shock and disbelief pervaded the ranks of political bigwigs on Monday as the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu announced Senate President Ahmed Lawan as the consensus presidential aspirant.
Adamu reportedly made the shocking revelation at the meeting of National Working Committee (NWC) of the party on Monday in Abuja.
Persecondnews reports that still in the race are Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Dr Kayode Fayemi, David Umahi and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu among others, who are expected to contest the presidential primary at the ongoing special convention at the Eagle Square, Abuja.
The adoption of Lawan as consensus candidate runs counter to the position of 11 APC Northern Governors, who at the weekend asked aspirants from the North to withdraw from the race.
They also endorsed that power must shift to the South after President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure in 2023.
According to Adamu, he arrived at the choice of Lawan after consultation with President Buhari.
The NWC members, however, insisted that other aspirants must be given a level playing field to contest for the party’s presidential ticket.
