President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday approved $8.5 million for the emergency evacuation of at least 5,000 stranded Nigerians in Ukraine due to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.

The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr Zubairu Dada, disclosed this to State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

According to Dada, the approval for the money followed a joint memo presented by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, for the evacuation of the stranded Nigerians now in Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland.

The Minister also disclosed that three aircraft; two from Air Peace and one from Max Air, would be dispatched to the four countries to carry out the evacuation exercise.

He noted that the flights will embark on several shifts until the process is complete.

Persecondnews.com reports that following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, many residents, including stranded Nigerians, have been forced to flee to neighboring countries for safety.
