The Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), an upstream subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, has reported an explosion at a production facility in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 40 involving its partners — Elcrest Exploration and Production Nigeria Ltd.

By the incident, a significant damage had been done to the marine storage vessel, MT Harcourt, with the attendant effect on production by about 10,000 barrels of oil per day.

No fatality or injury was, however, recorded while there was no significant spill in the incident.

NNPC’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs, Dr Kennie Obateru, said in a press statement emailed to Persecondnews that the explosion occurred while they were carrying out production evacuation at Gbetiokun Early Production facility.

He said the corporation had since commenced investigation to ascertain the cause of the incident with a view to averting recurrence.
