A spontaneous reaction from President Muhammadu Buhari on the Edo election has earned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) commendation for ensuring a transparent, free and fair electoral process.
Persecondnews had reported that Gov. Godwin Obaseki, who defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) after his estranged godfather, Adams Oshiomhole, denied him the party’s ticket for a second term run, was declared the winner by INEC on Sunday, polling 307, 955 votes to crush Osagie Ize-Iyamu of APC with 223, 619 votes.
Buhari while congratulating Obaseki urged him to show grace and humility in victory.
“My commitment to free and fair elections is firm because, without free and fair elections, the foundation of our political and moral authority will be weak.
“I have consistently advocated for free and fair elections in the country because it is the bedrock of true democratic order. Democracy will mean nothing if the votes of the people don’t count or if their mandate is fraudulently tampered with,’’ he said in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.
The President was full of praises for the people of Edo, the parties, the candidates, and security agencies for conducting themselves responsibly.
