Amid speculations that schools would reopen on June 21, the Federal Government says no date has been fixed yet for students to return to schools but only final year students would be recalled from the COVI-19 lockdown.
The Minister of State Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, restated government’s position on school reopening at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 on Monday in Abuja
“Of all the things I will love to do is that I will not want to experiment with your children. What we are planning is to bring those that will be exiting from Junior Secondary to Senior and those who will be writing the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC).
“We are however looking at when the interstate lockdown will be reopened so the children can move to write their exam in their schools,” he said.
The minister said the ministry was studying the timetable to know when it would be convenient to bring them to school as soon as there was ease of the interstate lockdown.
Nwajiuba said any news on reopening of schools would be communicated to Nigerians through the PTF.
“Any reopening of schools would involve the advice of experts on when it is safer to reopen schools. This is to avoid the mistake of shifting the student in and out of school.”
Nwajiuba insisted that the ministry would not lead Nigerians into danger because it was in a hurry to reopen the schools, adding we will only reopen when it was safe to do so’’.
