The Federal Government has offered a reprieve for Nigerian nationals living abroad who are desirous of returning to the country following the spread of COVID-19 globally.

To this end, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has directed all its missions abroad to compile lists of Nigerian nationals wishing to come back home.

Disclosing this, the Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said the intervention followed requests received from Nigerians stranded abroad amid the coronavirus pandemic.

She, however, said the returnees would bear the cost of flight.

“The ministry has instructed that the financial implications would be borne by the prospective evacuees, who will be compulsorily quarantined when they returned,’’ Dabiri-Erewa said in a statement by  the Head, Media and Public Relations Unit, NIDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.

She said interested Nigerians should inform the embassy in their country of residence about their intention to return to Nigeria.

“The interested Nigerians are advised to inform the missions in the various countries they are in, which will then collate and coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“They should key into the Federal Government’s gesture by providing information to the mission in their respective host countries,’’ she said.

Persecondnews recalls that already some countries including the UK, U.S, Israel and some European Union countries had begun evacuating their citizens from Nigeria using emergency flights permitted by the Federal Government.
