In anticipation of possible harassment of tanker drivers by security agencies during COVID-19 lockdown across the country, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has appealed to them to allow free movement of tankers on the highways.
President Muhammadu Buhari and some state governments had ordered lockdown and restrictions to curtail the spread of the virus.
Persecondnews recalls that the president had exempted some workers providing essential services including filling stations, tanker drivers and medical and health personnel as well as food companies among others.
The NNPC Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Dr Kennie Obateru, said in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday that the exemption granted by the President should be obeyed by the law enforcement agents on the roads.
“The Federal Government counts on the support of the law enforcement agencies across the country to ensure smooth distribution of petroleum products across the nook and cranny of the country during the period of the restriction.
“NNPC holds over 2.6 billion litres of petrol enough to last the period of the lockdown and beyond,’’ he said.
Obateru restated the warning of the Group Managing Director of NNPC, Malam Mele Kyari that motorists and the public should not engage in panic buying as it the corporation has enough petrol in stock.
