Nicolas Jackson’s clinical double powered Aston Villa to a landmark win over Manchester City, ending the visitors’ perfect start of seven straight victories under Enzo Maresca on Unai Emery’s fourth anniversary as manager.
Villa claimed their fifth win in seven meetings against City and a fourth successive home success, climbing into the top half after taking 11 points from six matches following two early-season losses.
John McGinn seized on Marc Guehi’s poor touch to release Jackson, who turned inside Elliot Anderson and finished high past Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Iliman Ndiaye hit the post before Erling Haaland headed in Ndiaye’s right-sided cross early in the second half.
Haaland has scored in each of his last seven Premier League away games against Burnley, Everton, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace (twice), Manchester United, Liverpool and Villa—only Robin van Persie (nine) has a longer streak.
The equaliser lasted just eight minutes as Ibrahim Mbaye’s low cross was finished first-time by Jackson under Donnarumma’s left hand.
Ian Maatsen cleared a late Haaland header to seal Villa’s first home league win of the season.
