The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT Council, has suspended its indefinite strike, directing FCT teachers to resume work on Wednesday, October 21, while warning that failure to implement agreed resolutions will trigger an automatic resumption of the strike.
The council announced the suspension in a communiqué signed by its chairman, Comrade Knabayi S. Adalo, and issued after its State Executive Council , SEC,meeting held on Friday, October 16, 2026, at Labour House, Central Business District, Abuja.
The decision followed deliberations on unresolved labour issues affecting FCT teachers and the outcome of conciliation meetings involving the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and NLC.
The council declared: “That the indefinite strike action declared by NLC FCT Council be and is hereby suspended with immediate effect.”
It directed teachers and other workers to return to their duties, stating: “That all workers, particularly FCT Teachers, are directed to resume work on Wednesday, 21st October, 2026.”
On the promotion of Education Officers, the council resolved that vacancies would be determined by establishment positions declared by the Education Secretariat.
It added that vacancies were expected to arise as several Directorate staff would soon leave the service, creating opportunities for the upward movement of officers.
On the 2025 promotion examination, the council disclosed that a new date would be announced in line with the approval of the FCT Executive Council, which had been communicated to the FCT Civil Service Commission.
The council also resolved that the directive suspending further action on the redeployment of officers enjoying the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers to classrooms would remain in force pending further directives.
The NLC FCT Council emphasized that the decision to suspend the strike was taken in the interest of social dialogue and industrial harmony.
It also announced plans to establish a monitoring committee to ensure the implementation of the resolutions within agreed timelines.
The council warned: “That failure to implement any of the resolutions shall lead to automatic resumption of the strike without further notice.”
It also resolved that no worker should be victimised or subjected to reprisals for participating in the industrial action.
The SEC appreciated the FCTA management, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, NUT FCT Wing, affiliate unions and FCT workers for their solidarity and understanding throughout the strike.
It also commended FCT teachers for their resolve and discipline during the industrial action.
PerSecondNews recalls that the strike began on October 7, following the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT Administration on September 8 over teachers’ promotion requirements, the 2025 promotion examination and the redeployment of directors benefiting from the Harmonised Retirement Age for Teachers Act, 2022.
