Tanzanian First Gentleman Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, passed away at 76 on Monday morning following a heart condition.
Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi confirmed the news during a live broadcast, noting that Ameir died around 8:00 a.m. at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.
He conveyed condolences to President Samia, the deceased’s family, relatives and friends, as well as the people of Tanzania.
The Vice-President also announced that arrangements for Ameir’s burial were underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.
Ameir was an agricultural academic who largely stayed away from the political spotlight and maintained a private life despite his wife’s prominent position.
Persecondnews recalls that he became Tanzania’s First Gentleman in 2021, following Samia’s assumption of office as the country’s first female President.
The couple married in 1978, years before Samia began her political career, and had four children, three sons and a daughter.
Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is also involved in politics and serves as a member of Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.
