An Abuja Federal High Court has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and the Nigeria Police Force to allow Adeniyi Adeyemi, a suspect linked to the alleged fake Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), unrestricted access to his legal team.
Ruling on an ex parte fundamental rights application presented by defence counsel M.B. Abdulazeez, Justice Obiora Egwuatu ordered authorities to permit Adeyemi to meet with his chosen lawyers at all reasonable hours for the duration of his detention.
Alongside legal representation, Adeyemi’s suit seeks bail, an immediate release from custody, and access to independent medical care.
His legal team further asked the court to restrain the respondents, including their officers and agents, from interrogating him or requiring him to make, adopt or sign any statement without a lawyer of his choice being present.
However, Justice Egwuatu declined to grant the other reliefs at the ex parte stage, insisting that the respondents should first be heard.
Subsequently, the judge gave the AGF and the police 72 hours to show cause why the remaining reliefs sought by Adeyemi should not be granted.
Further proceeding in the case has been adjourned until September 9.
PerSecondNews recalls that Adeyemi had earlier been declared wanted in connection with allegations surrounding the purported PFIPC scandal.
He was arrested in Osun State and taken to Abuja.
