President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will deliver a joint address to the National Assembly on Friday, June 12, as the centerpiece of a carefully curated schedule of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, announced this during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee charged with organising the national celebrations at the Shehu Shagari Complex in Abuja.

Akume portrayed Democracy Day as a time for sober reflection on the sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for the return of democratic rule, paying special tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle and the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

He noted that the commemoration also offers the Federal Government an opportunity to showcase its achievements in strengthening democratic institutions and advancing national development despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.

With only ten days remaining, he urged the committee to swing into action without delay, ensuring the activities resonate with the nation’s mood and reflect the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.

The approved activities for the 27th Democracy Day celebrations include a World Press Conference on Thursday, June 4, 2026; Special Juma’at Prayers on Friday, June 5, 2026; a Special Inter-denominational Church Service on Sunday, June 7, 2026; the Democracy Day Public Lecture on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

Other activities include Youth and Women-Oriented Programmes on Wednesday, June 10, 2026; a Presidential Broadcast on Friday, June 12, 2026; and a Democracy Day Gala Night on Friday, June 12, 2026.
