NIMC Warns Nigerians Over Fake NIN Correction Portal, Lists Official Channels for Updates

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has alerted Nigerians to a fraudulent social media post claiming that a free “NIN correction portal” has been opened for data modifications, warning that the message is a online scam targeting unsuspecting citizens.

In a public advisory issued on its official X handle on Tuesday, the commission said the circulating links are designed to deceive users and potentially compromise their personal information.

“NIMC warns the public against a fraudulent social media post claiming a free ‘Correction Portal’ is open via malicious links. This is a phishing scam,” the agency stated.

The commission assured Nigerians that the National Identity Database remains secure and fully protected, adding that citizens should avoid engaging with unofficial websites or messages requesting personal data.

“We assure citizens that the National Identity Database is secure and fully protected,” NIMC said, urging the public to remain vigilant.

To prevent identity theft and fraud, the commission advised Nigerians not to click on any unauthorized links and to rely only on approved platforms for NIN-related services.

According to NIMC, individuals seeking corrections or updates to their National Identification Number records should use the official self-service portal or visit accredited enrollment centres nationwide.

The commission also urged citizens to verify all information through its official communication channels and website before taking any action online.

NIMC further encouraged Nigerians to report suspicious messages or websites claiming to offer identity services outside its approved platforms.
