A crack team from the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), backed by officers from the Mabushi Police Division, has raided a hub of fake third-party motor insurance operators in Mabushi in the Federal Capital Territory.

The operation, which took place on Thursday at the plaza near the VIO office, was witnessed firsthand by the Persecondnews crew.

Designed to protect motorists from fraudulent policies, the raid led to the confiscation of laptops, printers, generators, counterfeit documents, and fake license plates.

Full video coverage of the bust is available on our YouTube channel.

Items recovered included 17 HP laptops, three Samsung laptops, six Dell laptops, two Compaq laptops, fake documents, three fake plate numbers, two generators and printers.

Dr. Talmiz Usman, Director of Legal Enforcement and Market Development at NAICOM, described the crackdown as essential.

“Wiping out fake insurance operators is a task that must be done to protect third-party road users,” Persecondnews quotes Usman as saying.

“The risk of driving a car is enormous, hence the need for insurance. This has spiked demand, hence the surge in fake operations. Nobody is allowed to sell third-party insurance, not even the VIO.”

According to him, the new law now gives the commission full powers to prosecute.

“The new law gives the commission the power to prosecute, so the over 15 operators apprehended will be formally charged on Friday,” Usman said.

This raid is part of a broader, nationwide enforcement drive triggered by a recent directive from the Inspector-General of Police demanding strict compliance with third-party motor vehicle insurance.

The crackdown aligns with NAICOM’s strategic initiative to permanently eradicate the proliferation of counterfeit insurance documents across the country.

Anyone convicted will face penalties under the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025 (NIIRA 2025), which prescribes a fine of N200,000 or imprisonment for a term of one year, or both.

NAICOM reiterated its determination to sanitise the insurance market and called on Nigerians to always verify the authenticity of their policies through the commission’s approved verification platforms.
