Instagram has officially discontinued support for end-to-end encrypted direct messages, marking a major shift in the platform’s privacy policy and sparking debate among digital rights advocates and child protection groups.

The change took effect on Friday, according to an update published on Instagram’s help page. The platform informed users that encrypted messaging would no longer be supported after May 8, 2026.

“End-to-end encrypted messaging on Instagram will no longer be supported after 8 May 2026,” the company stated.

Instagram said users with affected chats would receive guidance on how to download messages, photos, videos or other media they wish to keep before the feature is fully disabled.

The company also noted that some users may need to update the app to access the download option.

Persecondnews reports that End-to-end encryption (E2EE) is a security feature designed to ensure that only the sender and recipient can access the contents of a message or call.

Under the system, conversations are protected with digital security keys stored on users’ devices, preventing third parties including the platform owner from reading messages or listening to calls.

Explaining how the feature worked, Instagram stated that messages in encrypted chats were “locked” during transmission and could only be unlocked by devices possessing the correct security keys.

The same protection applied to voice and video calls.

The platform had previously described encrypted messaging as a key privacy safeguard, saying even its parent company, Meta Platforms, could not access the content of protected conversations.

However, Meta has now reversed course after years of promoting expanded encryption across its platforms.

The company had announced in 2019 that it intended to make private messaging the future of communication on Facebook and Instagram.

While encryption was fully rolled out on Facebook Messenger in 2023, Instagram’s version remained optional and was never made the default system.

Meta reportedly told reporters that the feature was being discontinued because too few users opted in to use encrypted chats.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions globally.

Child protection organisations welcomed the move, arguing that encrypted messaging can make it harder for authorities to detect harmful or exploitative activity online.

Privacy advocates, however, described the decision as a setback for digital security and personal privacy.

Critics warned that removing E2EE could increase access to private user communications and raise concerns over data collection and artificial intelligence training.

Cybersecurity analysts also noted that the decision may influence other social media companies as debates continue worldwide over balancing user privacy, online safety and law enforcement access to digital communications.
