The Federal Government has hailed the election of Dr. Taoheed Olufemi Elias into the United Nations International Law Commission (ILC), describing it as a major boost to Nigeria’s international standing and diplomatic influence.
Elias was elected during the Commission’s 77th session in Geneva, Switzerland, following a competitive process involving candidates from Botswana and Ghana to fill a casual vacancy.
Persecondnews reports that, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on behalf of the Federal Government on Thursday, said the development reflects global recognition of Nigeria’s longstanding contributions to international law and multilateral engagement.
“The election of Dr. Taoheed Olufemi Elias is a significant recognition of Nigeria’s enduring role in the development and advancement of international law and diplomacy,” the statement said.
The Federal Government noted that Dr. Elias brings decades of distinguished service and extensive experience in international legal affairs, adding that his track record positioned him strongly for the role.
It also highlighted his previous roles as Registrar of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT), with the rank of United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, as well as senior legal positions at the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the World Bank Administrative Tribunal, and the United Nations Compensation Commission.
According to the government, his election reinforces Nigeria’s visibility in global legal governance and multilateral decision making.
“We are confident that Dr. Elias will bring his vast expertise, professionalism and commitment to the rule of law to bear in advancing the work of the Commission,” the statement added.
The government further expressed optimism that his presence in the Commission would promote “justice, international cooperation and peaceful coexistence among nations.”
It congratulated Dr. Elias on the achievement and wished him a successful tenure in office.
