Nigerian Military Foils Suicide Attack, Arrests Bomber, Seizes 189 AK-47 Rifles

In a significant security breakthrough, troops from “Operation Hadin Kai” have arrested a suspected suicide bomber and seized bomb-making materials in Borno State.

The suspect, Abubakar Mustapha, was captured on Monday in Banki town, Bama Local Government Area, during a joint operation led by the 152 Task Force Battalion.

According to Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, Media Information Officer for the Joint Task Force North-East, Mustapha was found with primed IED components, suggesting an attack was imminent.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect hails from Bama Local Government Area and was further discovered to be in possession of additional incriminating materials linked to terrorist activities.

“He is currently undergoing detailed interrogation to establish his sponsors, collaborators, and possible links with terrorist networks operating within the area,” Sani said.

In a linked border operation, troops intercepted a Peugeot vehicle carrying six bags of urea fertilizer.

Subsequent intelligence-led actions resulted in the apprehension of the dealer and the recovery of six additional bags.

Total seizures now stand at 12 bags of IED precursors, significantly disrupting the local manufacture of explosives.

“Both the vehicle and the fertiliser were immediately taken into military custody. All suspects and recovered items are currently in custody for further investigation and necessary legal action,” Sani added.

The military reaffirmed its commitment to securing the North-East, stressing that troops would continue to deny terrorists freedom of movement.

“Troops of JTF NE OPHK continue to dominate their areas of responsibility through aggressive patrols, intelligence-led operations, and sustained presence, in order to deny JAS/ISWAP terrorists freedom of action and prevent attacks on civilian populations and critical infrastructure,” he said.

In the North-West, the Nigerian Army also reported substantial operational achievements under Operation Fasanyama.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 8 Division announced a significant blow to regional instability during the 2025 Combined West African Social Activities.

He revealed that sustained operations across Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, and Zamfara have resulted in the rescue of 1,023 kidnap victims.

These missions also led to the recovery of a massive arsenal—including 189 AK-47 rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition—while successfully neutralizing high-profile bandit leaders and dismantling their strongholds.

“These operations have restored confidence among communities and boosted economic activities, as farmers and traders now access areas previously considered unsafe,” the GOC said.

The GOC added that the division had strengthened its operational capacity by creating special task units capable of precision strike-and-destroy missions.

Troop welfare and infrastructure also received priority attention, with upgrades to medical facilities, engagement of additional health personnel, and renovation of accommodation blocks.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to consolidating gains recorded and transforming our forces into a professional, combat-ready, and resilient force. Personnel are urged to remain disciplined, vigilant, and security-conscious,” he said.

The 2025 WASA celebration, a military tradition established over a century ago to foster camaraderie and cultural exchange, featured an esteemed guest list.

Notable attendees included the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, and retired Col. Ahmed Abdoul, representing the state government, along with a host of traditional rulers.
