Nigeria was plunged into darkness on Monday following yet another collapse of the national grid.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed the incident via X (formerly Twitter) on December 29, noting that power generation plummeted to a mere 50 megawatts (MW) as restoration efforts commenced.

This is a staggering drop from the 3,660 MW allocated just a day prior.

At the time of reporting, only Abuja and Ibadan had regained limited supply.

This latest failure highlights the persistent fragility of the nation’s power infrastructure.

While NISO and the Nigerian National Grid (NNG) have confirmed that recovery is underway, both the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Ministry of Power have yet to provide a formal explanation for the breakdown or a definitive timeline for full restoration.
