Following the Christmas day US air strikes against terrorist targets in the Northwest, the Federal Government confirmed on Friday morning that Nigeria continues to maintain structured security partnerships with international allies, including the United States, to combat terrorism and violent extremism.
A press release from the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs attributed the successful air strikes to ongoing intelligence sharing and strategic coordination with global partners.
The Ministry emphasized that this collaboration has enabled precision strikes against specific terrorist strongholds within the North West region.
Officials clarified that these operations align with standard international practices and bilateral agreements.
The government stressed that all activities are conducted with full respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and in adherence to international law.
It stated: “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria confirms that Nigerian authorities remain engaged in structured security cooperation with international partners, including the United States of America, in addressing the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism.
“In line with established international practice and bilateral understandings, this cooperation includes the exchange of intelligence, strategic coordination, and other forms of support consistent with international law, mutual respect for sovereignty, and shared commitments to regional and global security.”
The government stressed that protecting civilians remains central to all counter terrorism efforts.
“Nigeria reiterates that all counter terrorism efforts are guided by the primacy of protecting civilian lives, safeguarding national unity, and upholding the rights and dignity of all citizens, irrespective of faith or ethnicity,” the statement said, insisting that terrorist violence against any group remains unacceptable.
“Terrorist violence in any form whether directed at Christians, Muslims, or other communities remains an affront to Nigeria’s values and to international peace and security.”
The Ministry further noted that Nigeria continues to work with partners to weaken terrorist networks, disrupt their funding and logistics, and prevent cross border threats, while strengthening national security and intelligence capacity.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining these international partnerships and pledged to provide the public with regular updates through official channels.
This announcement coincides with a statement from the United States, which confirmed plans to deploy additional support to Nigeria’s northern states.
This assistance is intended to strengthen surveillance, security operations, and broader counter-terrorism efforts in the wake of recent military activity.
Persecondnews reported that President Trump had described the operation as “powerful and deadly,” saying it was ordered in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief.
