Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a 2-1 defeat to Egypt in a friendly match, exposing defensive vulnerabilities ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Egypt took the lead in the 28th minute through Saber, who capitalized on a low cross from Ahmed “Zizo”.

Nigeria equalized before halftime courtesy of Chidozie Awaziem’s header, but Egypt regained the lead in the 52nd minute through Mostafa Mohamed.

The match highlighted concerns about Nigeria’s wide defensive areas, particularly the performances of Osayi-Samuel and Zaidu Sanusi.

The Super Eagles in transition were predictable, aside Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s influence in the final third, the team lacked the cutting edge to trouble the Egyptians.

Second-half substitutes Tochukwu Nnadi and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro offered some positives.

Nnadi displayed notable composure and authority in midfield, while Akinsanmiro showed promise despite being played out of his natural position.

This sobering defeat acts as a crucial wake-up call for coach Eric Chelle, who must swiftly address the team’s lingering issues before the AFCON tournament.

The Super Eagles will face Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda in Group C, and will need to iron out their defensive frailties to make a deep run in the competition.
