Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), three months after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over alleged manipulation of its presidential primary.
PerSecondNews correspondent reports that Lawal officially joined the party in Abuja on Tuesday and was received by NDC National Leader, Sen. Seriake Dickson and other party members.
In his remarks, the former SGF listed insecurity, hunger, poverty and other challenges confronting Nigerians as reasons for his decision to join the party.
“Anybody in Nigeria who has the interest of our country at heart and sympathy for the suffering that is ongoing in our country, along with insecurity, hunger, ignorance and disease, will have no choice but to join,” Lawal stated.
He also reflected on his experience with previous political platforms, pointing to what he described as their failure to deliver the changes they had promised Nigerians.
“I have seen political parties that have promised Nigerians change, but unfortunately they have not been able to deliver the change and have taken the country from top to bottom,” he noted.
Lawal also expressed support for the NDC presidential ticket, describing his decision to work with the party as part of what he considered a patriotic objective for the country.
“It is now convincing to partner with the NDC to see to the fulfilment of the very noble patriotic objective of installing Peter Obi as the president and Rabiu Kwankwaso as the Vice President,” he noted.
While outlining Lawal’s new responsibilities, NDC National Leader, Sen. Seriake Dickson, assigned him to lead the party’s activities and campaigns across the North-East.
“You will take leadership of all our activities and campaigns in the North Eastern part of Nigeria. We did very well in the North East and won a lot of states, and we want to repeat that feat,” he said.
Dickson also placed the North-Central campaign structure under Lawal’s oversight, extending his responsibilities beyond the region where he would initially coordinate the party’s activities.
“From today also, oversee and guide the efforts of our party and our candidates and all the campaigns in the North Central part of Nigeria too, until further notice.”
The assignment also requires Lawal to help address challenges involving the party’s candidates and campaign structures in both regions.
“We count on you to help resolve issues, give guidance and direction to the activities of all our candidates and our campaigns in those zones,” Dickson emphasized .
Beyond the two regions, the party expects Lawal to draw on his political relationships and experience to support its wider activities.
“We expect you to deploy your far-reaching contacts and network across Nigeria to the advantage of our party and to our efforts to change things in Nigeria for good,” he stated.
Dickson, who also described Lawal as an experienced political organiser and mobiliser, pointed to his activities beyond his former government position.
“Behind the official designations that are known, what is not known is that he is a great mobilizer. He.is actually some sort of political activist also, an organiser.”
PerSecondNews recalls that Lawal had resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on June 29, 2025, ending his membership of the party he had belonged to since its formation.
He subsequently joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), but left the party in June 2026 after alleging that its presidential primary was manipulated in favour of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
