In a stunning WAFCON 2026 Group C opener, debutants Malawi pulled off a massive 3-2 upset over ten-time champions Nigeria at the Al Madina Stadium.

The Chawinga sisters stole the show, relentlessly tearing through a fragile Super Falcons defence, reports Persecondnews correspondent from Rabat.

Temwa Chawinga broke the deadlock in the 74th minute, and Tabitha doubled the advantage just moments later—leaving the defending champions stunned and scrambling in a chaotic, end-to-end clash.

Rasheedat Ajibade restored hope from the penalty spot, converting to make it 2-1 and sparking a late Super Falcons fightback.

Temwa Chawinga quickly restored the two-goal cushion with her second strike of the night, completing a personal brace and putting Malawi 3-1 ahead.

Uchenna Kanu pulled another goal back late on to reduce the deficit to 3-2, but it proved too little too late for the ten-time champions.

The final whistle confirmed a stunning victory for the tournament newcomers on their first appearance at the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Malawi’s clinical finishing and Nigeria’s defensive frailties combined to produce one of the competition’s most dramatic opening-night results.
