With millions displaced and communities devastated by years of war in Yemen, Nigeria has intervened, appealing for calm following renewed hostilities involving the Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia.

The Federal Government warned that continued fighting could further endanger civilian lives and undermine peace and stability across the region.

Nigeria’s call comes days after Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement launched missile and drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities in Jizan and Yanbu, prompting retaliatory strikes by Saudi-backed forces and raising fears of a wider regional conflict.

The renewed fighting has heightened concerns over regional security and global energy supplies

The latest escalation has also fuelled fears that the conflict could reverse years of fragile calm following the 2022 truce, with warnings that continued hostilities could further destabilise the Middle East.

Nigeria’s position was contained in a statement sent to Persecondnews on Sunday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.

“Nigeria strongly calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint, immediately de-escalate the situation, and refrain from any further actions that could inflame hostilities or endanger civilian lives and regional peace and stability,” it stated.

The government urged the parties to resolve their differences through dialogue, diplomacy and other peaceful means in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter and international law.
Nigeria also reaffirmed its commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes and expressed readiness to support genuine and constructive efforts aimed at reducing tensions, restoring calm and promoting lasting peace and stability in the region.
