The Federal Government says it is protecting Nigerians affected by anti-immigrant attacks in South Africa through diplomacy, evacuation and engagement with South African authorities.

Following Tuesday’s evacuation of the third batch of Nigerians from South Africa after the June 30 deadline issued by pressure group, March and March, for undocumented migrants to leave the country, the Federal Government has stepped up diplomatic engagement.

In an interview on Channels TV, monitored by Persecondnews, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs, Ademola Oshodi, said the government had intensified diplomatic efforts to protect Nigerians and their interests in South Africa.

“The Nigerian government has expressed its great displeasure about what’s happening there. Nigeria is taking steps to safeguard its nationals,” he said.

Oshodi said Nigeria had summoned South Africa’s High Commissioner, protested the attacks and intensified diplomatic efforts to prevent further violence against Nigerians.

“We have asked the South African government to protect our nationals, protect our properties and ensure that people harmed receive justice.”

He said the government was acting cautiously because both countries share strong economic ties and long-standing diplomatic relations.

“We have to do things incrementally.South Africa is a very important business and investment destination for Nigeria, and vice versa.”

Oshodi maintained that the safety of Nigerians remained the government’s top priority despite those economic interests.

“We take the lives of Nigerians more important than even this investment that I’m talking about.”

He said evacuation was only part of the response, with support already in place to help returnees settle back into Nigeria.

“The government is giving them money, transportation and working to reintegrate them into society regarding employment and healthcare as well as their state governments,” he added.

Oshodi maintained that diplomacy remained the most effective way to secure justice and protect Nigerians without escalating tensions.

“The diplomatic way is the best way. We are going to ensure our nationals are protected through the right channels.”
