High-profile constitutional lawyer and human rights activist Prof. Mike Ozekhome has been temporarily stripped of his Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) title, following a suspension by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC).
The disciplinary action was decided during the LPPC’s 173rd General Meeting.
In a statement issued by Committee Secretary Mr. Kabiru Eniola Akanbi, the body confirmed that the suspension aligns with Paragraph 26(6) of the SAN conferment guidelines.
Akanbi, who is also the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, explained that the suspension will remain in place until disciplinary proceedings against Ozekhome are concluded by the LPPC’s Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee.
According to the committee, the action was taken to protect the integrity, dignity, and reputation of the SAN title.
Following the suspension, Ozekhome is not allowed to present himself as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria while the disciplinary case is ongoing.
The LPPC stated that it remains committed to maintaining high standards of ethics, integrity, and discipline within the legal profession, and ensuring that the SAN rank continues to enjoy public trust and respect.
