United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, saying every decision he made in office was driven by a desire to put the country first.

In a televised address outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer thanked his family for their support and indicated he would step aside after a leadership transition process within the Labour Party.

His departure follows months of internal party unrest, falling approval ratings and growing calls from Labour lawmakers for new leadership. Reports suggest the resignation paves the way for a leadership contest, with figures including Andy Burnham emerging as potential successors. Starmer said a new leader should be in place by September.
