In observance of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, the Federal Government has declared Friday, June 12, a public holiday.

Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior, made the declaration on behalf of the government in an official statement issued by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, who noted that June 12 continues to hold vital importance in the nation’s history.

The day honours the courage, resilience and sacrifices of Nigerians whose efforts helped make democratic governance possible in the country.

“Their legacy continues to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state,” the government said.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to democratic values, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance.

“The administration has pledged to uphold these principles without compromise.

“The Ministry of Interior, in coordination with relevant security agencies, will continue to maintain and strengthen internal security measures to protect lives and property across the country,” Dr Tunji-Ojo said.

The minister said a secure and stable environment is necessary for democracy and national development.

He called on Nigerians to use the holiday as a time for reflection and urged citizens to recommit themselves to lawful conduct, responsible engagement and national unity.

“As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens,” he said.
