Nigerians stranded in South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks are expected to arrive in Lagos on Thursday, June 11 as the Federal Government begins the repatriation process.Kimiebi Ebienfa Imomotimi, spokesperson of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday,

An Air Peace flight carrying the returnees is scheduled to depart Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport on Wednesday night, according to the ministry.

Officials stated the aircraft is expected to land at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos around 5 a.m. on Thursday.

The evacuation follows renewed concerns over attacks and hostility directed at foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, forcing some Nigerians to indicate interest in returning home.Persecondnews recalls that the Federal Government had earlier pledged support for Nigerians affected by the situation, assuring that it was engaging relevant authorities to ensure their safety and welfare.
