A coalition of civil society groups under the banner of “Concerned Nigerians for Peace, Security and National Unity” staged a peaceful march in Abuja on Tuesday, raising alarms over worsening national insecurity and calling for solidarity and coordinated action.

Persecondnews correspondent who joined the road walk, reports that the procession kicked off at the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and marched to the National Assembly gates, where demonstrators presented a list of demands for improved governance and security.

Warning that the crisis has escalated into a non-partisan threat affecting all citizens, participants urged immediate government intervention to prevent further deterioration.

Co-convener Comrade Isah Abubakar emphasized that insecurity has reached a state of national emergency, demanding decisive leadership and a unified response.

“Insecurity in Nigeria has reached a critical point where every citizen is affected regardless of tribe, religion, or political background.

“We must unite as one nation to confront this threat and protect the future of our country,” he said, adding that that leaders must prioritise national interest above politics.

“We are calling on all leaders, past and present, to put Nigeria first, rise above political differences, and work together sincerely to develop practical solutions that will restore peace and public confidence,” he said.

Calling for urgent government action, Abubakar also said:“The time for delay is over. Nigerians deserve safety in their homes, on their roads, and in their communities. Government must act decisively and without hesitation to secure the nation.”

On the issue of state police, he said the proposal must be carefully considered and implemented with broad consultation.

“The idea of state policing is something that must be openly discussed, properly structured, and subjected to wide public consultation to ensure it does not become politicised or abused by any level of government,” he stressed.

Another Co-convener, Austin Okai, also emphasized collective responsibility in tackling insecurity.

“Insecurity has become a shared national burden that requires unity of purpose from government, security agencies, and citizens working together to protect lives and property across the country,” he noted.

He added that leaders in the National Assembly must unite beyond party lines.

“Irrespective of political party affiliation in the National Assembly, our leaders must speak with one voice because every state has representatives in the House, and security is a national issue that demands collective responsibility,” he said.

“What we need now is not just statements, but coordinated action, improved intelligence sharing, and proactive measures that can prevent attacks and restore confidence in the system.”

Group Secretary Okpanachi Jacob emphasized that sustained advocacy and civic pressure are vital to keeping national security at the top of the government’s agenda.

“We must continue to speak with one voice on insecurity and ensure that leaders remain constantly aware that Nigerians are demanding action, not promises,” Jacob noted.

He further stressed that public unity is essential to achieving lasting results in the fight against the crisis.

“Only through unity, consistency, and collective engagement can we push for a safer nation where every citizen can live without fear,” he said.

Persecondnews reports that the rally concluded with a clear consensus – defeating insecurity demands an urgent, united front between the government, security agencies, and the public.
