Following delays linked to operational planning, the Federal Government has shifted the evacuation of Nigerians stranded in South Africa from Monday June 8 to Wednesday, June 10.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the repatriation exercise could not proceed as earlier scheduled because some logistics connected to the operation were still being concluded.

The ministry explained that the adjustment in date was aimed at ensuring a hitch-free process for the returnees and all agencies involved in the exercise.

Preparations are being coordinated to meet outstanding requirements before the airlift begins on June 10, it said in a

statement on Monday obtained by Persecondnews in Abuja.

The evacuation programme was initiated for Nigerians who volunteered to return home amid renewed fears over hostility and attacks against foreign nationals in parts of South Africa.

Government officials disclosed that over 1,000 Nigerians had already undergone screening and clearance under the arrangement, while President Bola Tinubu approved five flights to support the operation.

The Ministry added that details concerning departure times and reception plans for the evacuees would be released after final approvals are completed.

Nigeria’s evacuation move comes as concerns continue to grow over anti-immigration protests in South Africa, with some African governments also making arrangements to assist affected citizens willing to leave the country.
