Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has clinched the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket for the 2027 general election.
He defeated his closest rivals, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi and veteran banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, during the party’s presidential primary.
The official results, released in a statement on Wednesday night and obtained by Persecondnews, showed Atiku winning in a landslide with 1,855,787 votes.
Amaechi secured second place with 509,397 votes, while Hayatu-Deen finished third with 180,903 votes.
“Atiku defeats Amaechi, Hayatudeen to secure ADC Presidential Ticket,” the statement announced.
“Final result: Atiku 1,855,787, Amaechi 509,397, Hayatudeen 180,903. Total votes cast in the election: 2,546,457. Total party membership for the election: 3,113,599. Congratulations to Waziri Atiku.”
A breakdown of the figures showed that the former vice president defeated Amaechi by a margin of 1,346,390 votes, while his lead over Hayatu-Deen stood at 1,674,884 votes.
Persecondnews recalls that the primary process kicked off on Monday, May 25, 2026, drawing participation from party members across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The ADC pivoted to a direct primary model after the three frontrunners reportedly rejected appeals from party stakeholders to agree on a consensus candidate.
While party leaders initially favored a simple affirmation process, they ultimately moved forward with the direct primary format to ensure strict compliance with the Electoral Act 2026.
