Aston Villa delivered a masterclass of patience and firepower to crush Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final at Istanbul’s Tüpraş Stadium on Wednesday night, claiming their first major honour in 30 years and ending a 44-year wait for European silverware.
The Midlands side, sitting fourth in the Premier League, twice struck in the closing moments of the first half before sealing the rout after the break.
Youri Tielemans opened the scoring with a thunderous volley from a cleverly worked corner, leaving Freiburg’s defence helpless.
Just three minutes into stoppage time, Emiliano Buendia found space on the edge of the box and curled a sumptuous shot into the far top corner for 2-0.
Morgan Rodgers made it three in the second half, ghosting in at the near post to tap home Buendia’s low cross and complete the one-sided victory.
Freiburg had tried to disrupt Villa with a physical, combative approach, but the English club stayed composed before exploding into life.
The triumph keeps Aston Villa’s flawless record in European finals intact and marks their second straight win over German opposition, following their 1982 success against Bayern Munich.
Coach Unai Emery extended his own remarkable Europa League legacy, lifting the trophy for a record fifth time and becoming the first manager to win it with three different clubs — three titles with Sevilla and one with Villarreal.
As Europa League champions, Villa secure a place in next season’s Champions League and will face either Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on 12 August.
