The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has raised the alarm over a surge in attacks on media professionals and deteriorating welfare conditions across the country.
The union warned that these hostile conditions are actively undermining press freedom and democratic accountability.
Speaking at the 2026 NUJ FCT Council Press Week in Abuja on Tuesday, NUJ National President Alhassan Yahaya described the current media landscape as dismal.
Persecondnews reports that the event brought together journalists, security agencies, regulators and corporate stakeholders in Abuja.
He emphasized that journalists continue to work under unsafe conditions that severely hinder effective media practice.
“We call for improved welfare packages, insurance protections, prompt payment of salaries and greater institutional support for journalists nationwide,” he said.
He warned that poor welfare and insecurity were making journalism increasingly difficult and unsustainable.
“A journalist who works under fear, uncertainty and hardship cannot effectively discharge the responsibility of informing society.” he noted.
Yahaya also highlighted rising threats facing media professionals.
“Attacks on media professionals, harassment, intimidation, job insecurity and unsafe working conditions continue to threaten the integrity and effectiveness of journalism practice in our country.” he emphasized.
He called for stronger protection of press freedom and recognition of journalists as key partners in national development.
“We call for greater respect for press freedom and the protection of democratic values. Journalism has no enemies of the state; rather, we are partners in nation-building,” he added.
The NUJ president stressed the need for continuous training and capacity building to counter misinformation and strengthen professional standards.
“Journalists must remain committed to verification, accuracy, balance and professionalism. Our credibility remains our greatest asset.”
He also cautioned against unethical practices and sensational reporting.
“We must resist the temptation of sensationalism, political manipulation and unethical conduct capable of eroding public trust in the media.”
Yahaya further urged government and security agencies to guarantee the safety of journalists in the discharge of their duties.
“Security agencies must uphold the rights of journalists and guarantee their safety while carrying out lawful professional duties.”
He reaffirmed the union’s commitment to unity within the profession and called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to strengthen democracy and accountability.
