The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Joint Revenue Board have announced the implementation of a new Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system aimed at strengthening tax administration and improving transparency across Nigeria’s tax system.

In a public notice issued on Monday on the agency official X account, the agencies said the initiative was introduced in line with Sections 6, 7 and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which mandate every taxable person in the country to obtain a tax ID.

According to the NRC, the tax ID will serve as a single and unified identity for taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels.

The agencies explained that the system is designed to harmonise taxpayer records, eliminate duplication and improve the management of tax-related information nationwide.

Among the listed benefits are simplified tax registration, filing and payment processes, improved transparency, enhanced revenue assurance and better accountability.

The notice also noted that the new Tax ID system would replace the existing Tax Identification Number (TIN) Validation API currently used by Ministries, Departments and Agencies, financial institutions and other organisations.

For integration and validation services regarding individuals, enterprises, or business names, organisations should contact the JRB’s Standardisation and Modernisation Department.

Corporate entities seeking access to the new Tax ID API and integration guidelines should reach out to the NRS’s Tax Automation Department.
