Tragic! 17 Police Officers Killed in Yobe Army School Assault

Seventeen police officers undergoing advanced counter-terrorism training have been killed in a terrorist attack on a military school in Yobe State.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:15 a.m. on May 8, 2026, at the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area.

Confirming the incident on Saturday, Force Public Relations Officer DCP Anthony Placid stated that the attackers executed a highly coordinated ambush, striking the facility from several directions simultaneously.

“The officers, who were undergoing specialised operational training at the institution, lost their lives when terrorists launched a coordinated attack on the facility from multiple directions at about 0115hrs,” he said.

The authorities also confirmed that several Nigerian Army personnel lost their lives while successfully repelling the invasion.

In reaction to the tragedy, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu honoured the deceased officers, describing them as brave professionals whose dedication to national security was evident in their pursuit of advanced training.

While extending his deepest condolences to the grieving families, the IGP gave assurances that the ultimate sacrifices made by the fallen officers would never be forgotten.

“The sacrifices of the deceased officers will never be forgotten,” he said.

Yobe Police Commissioner Usman Jibrin has also visited the training facility to commiserate with military authorities and surviving personnel.

He encouraged officers still undergoing training to remain resilient and complete their programme in honour of their fallen colleagues.

“The resilience and courage of the surviving officers are commendable, and they must remain resolute in completing their training,” he said.

The police also confirmed that efforts are ongoing, in collaboration with the military and other security agencies, to track down and bring those responsible for the attack to justice.

The Force said the fallen officers would be honoured for their service and sacrifice to the nation.
