The Federal High Court in Kaduna was under heavy security on Tuesday as former Governor Nasir El-Rufai appeared for arraignment on corruption charges.
El-Rufai faces allegations of misappropriating over N432 billion in state funds during his eight-year tenure.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) confirmed that the suit (FHC/KD/73/2026) includes charges of money laundering and the illegal conversion of public property.
Security was remarkably tight, with Aliyu Akilu Road cordoned off and traffic diverted to manage the gridlock around the court complex.
El-Rufai arrived at approximately 9:20 a.m., dressed in a green babanriga, and was quickly escorted inside.
Despite the high-profile nature of the case, journalists were barred from the courtroom.
In addition to the federal case involving El-Rufai and co-defendant Joel Adoga, the ICPC disclosed a separate charge filed against the former governor and Amadu Sule (LEDA) at the Kaduna State High Court.
The case, with charge no. KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26, borders on abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage, among other offences.
The Commission noted that both charges were filed on March 18, 2026, adding that the date for arraignment at the State High Court would be communicated in due course.
It further confirmed that the former governor had been duly served, reiterating its commitment to due process and strict adherence to the rule of law in prosecuting the cases.
