Mohammed Kasim of the PDP has been declared the winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship race in the Saturday, February 21 polls.
Returning Officer Prof. Philip Akpeni announced the results this Sunday, noting that Kasim garnered 22,165 votes to clinch the seat.
According to Akpeni, the PDP candidate met all statutory requirements to be certified as the chairman-elect.
“I am the returning officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council, Gwagwalada chairmanship held on Feb. 21, 2026.
“That Mohammed Kasim of PDP, having certified the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,”Persecondnews quotes Akpeni as announcing.
He further revealed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Yahaya Usman, secured second place with 17,788 votes.
Meanwhile, Biko Umar of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) finished third, polling 1,687 votes.
The election took place across the council’s 10 administrative wards, including Paiko, Dobi, Gwako, Ibwa, and the Staff Quarters. Other participating wards were Zuba, Ikwa, Kutunku, Gwagwalada Centre, and Tunga Maje.
Persecondnews reports that during his campaign, his manifesto focused on community welfare, women’s empowerment, improved healthcare services, and enhanced education opportunities for children.

* 2016: Won by APGA (All Progressives Grand Alliance).
* 2019: Won by the APC.
* 2022: The APC (Abubakar Jibrin Giri) held the seat.
* 2026: PDP (Mohammed Kasim) wins.
