The community of Chiranchi, Dorayi Quarters in Gwale Local Government Area of Kano remains in deep mourning following the horrific murder of 35-year-old Fatima Abubakar and her six children in their home on Saturday.

The young victims were identified as Maimuna (17), Aisha (16), Bashir (13), Abubakar (10), Faruk (7), and infant Abdulsalam (1).

Recalling the incident, a neighbour, Malam Bala Abubakar, described hearing frantic screams that sent residents rushing into the streets in a desperate attempt to help.

The scene inside was devastating; the attackers had used a heavy sewing machine component to strike the children, leaving them with fatal head injuries.

Kano State Police have since apprehended three suspects, including the deceased woman’s 23-year-old nephew, Umar Auwalu, who reportedly confessed to leading the massacre.

The arrests took place during a specialized sting operation between the late hours of January 17 and the early morning of January 18, 2026.

Evidence recovered at the scene includes blood-stained clothing, a cutlass, a club, and two mobile phones belonging to the victims.

“When officers arrived, they moved swiftly, combing the premises and nearby areas,” Abubukar added.

Neighbours, including bricklayers working on a nearby house, were alerted by screams and quickly rushed to the scene.

Malam Bala, a neighbour, insisted that the community did not stand idly by, saying, “everyone came out, we all rushed to help.

“The residents surrounded the building to prevent the attackers’ escape and alerted security agencies. They also reported hearing the victim’s distressed cries, including her plea to “Umar, please don’t kill me,” implicating one of the attackers, Umar Auwalu, who is also the victim’s nephew.

“The police arrived promptly, combed the premises, and arrested three suspects, including Auwalu.”

Persecondnews reports that President Bola Tinubu has directed security agencies to apprehend and prosecute the suspected assailants.
