Samuel Chukwueze has come under fire from Nigerian fans following his “irresponsible” penalty miss in the AFCON 2025 semi-finals.

According to Persecondnews, Chukwueze was seen chewing gum and blowing bubbles just moments before his casual strike was comfortably saved by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

The miss proved costly, as the Super Eagles fell 4-2 on penalties following a scoreless 120 minutes on a chilly Wednesday night at Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.

Comedian @officialBovi slammed Chukwueze, saying “If you seek glory before victory, you will likely perish. Very irresponsible . Very f^^^^g irresponsible”.

Another fan, @_wsyd, echoed similar sentiments, stating “that penalty was supposed to take pressure off the team. his lackadaisical approach vexed my spirit more than the miss. what an irresponsible player!”

@socetyhatesjay shared a heartbreaking moment, saying “i’ve never seen my dad cry all my life but thanks to chukwueze, i watched the strongest man i know cry like a baby”.

@Oshoja_jr criticized Chukwueze’s body language, noting that “One thing about penalty kicks is your body language. His approach, even the way he walks to the ball was awful.

“No swagger, no ginger just walking like a 70yrs old woman. If he has scored, we would have one cos Nwabali would still save one more”.

The Super Eagles will now face Egypt in the third-place playoff, determined to bounce back from their semi-final defeat.

Eric Chelle’s side had a tough match against Morocco, with the hosts dominating possession and creating more chances.
