A devastating terrorist attack unfolded at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, leaving at least 12 people dead and 29 injured, including a child and two police officers, during a Hanukkah celebration.
The incident, which has been classified as a terrorist attack, occurred when two gunmen opened fire on a crowd of over 1,000 people gathered to mark the Jewish festival of lights.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed the attack, stating that one of the gunmen was among the casualties, while the second alleged shooter is in critical condition.
The attack has been condemned by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who described it as a “vile act of violence and hate” and an “act of evil antisemitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation”.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and concern, with world leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and French President Emmanuel Macron, condemning the attack.
A full inquiry into the incident has been announced, and security measures are being heightened at Jewish events and locations.
